Complaint Type: PRODUCTS
Comments: IT ALL STARTED LAST SPRING WHEN I WENT TO CARMAX IN RICHMOND, VIRGINIA. I TALKED TO A YOUNG GUY NAMED COLLIN KOKESH. HE SOLD ME A 1993 MERCURY TRACER WAGON AND ALSO SOLD ME A LO-JACK TO GO WITH IT! THEN WHEN THEY CAME TO INSTALL THE LO-JACK, THE INSTALLER SAYS THE CAR'S NOT COMPATIBLE WITH LO-JACKS, AND WHOEVER SOLD IT TO ME RIPPED ME OFF!! SO I WENT BACK AND GOT A REFUND FOR THAT....THEN I STARTED HAVING PROBLEMS, LIKE NO STARTS, ENGINE STALLS, ETC. SO WHEN I TOOK IT IN FOR SERVICE, I FIND THAT THE CAR HAD THE ODOMETER ROLLED BACK AND IT SHOULDNT HAVE BEEN SOLD TO ME IN THE FIRST PLACE!! (THAT IS ILLEGAL HERE IN THE COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA) SO TO APPEASE ME, THEY RIP UP THAT CONTRACT AND LET ME PICK ANOTHER CAR. I PICK ONE THAT HAS TO BE SHIPPED FROM THEIR LAUREL, MARYLAND LOT. WHEN IT GETS HERE, THEY TELL ME TO COME GET IT HAVING NOT CHECKED IT OR PREPPED IT OR ANYTHING. THEY SAID LAUREL WAS SUPPOSED TO DO IT. I CALLED LAUREL, AND THEY SAID RICHMOND WAS SUPPOSED TO DO IT...ANYWAY, THE NEW CAR THEY GAVE ME, 1993 TAURUS GL WAGON, HAS ONE THING AFTER ANOTHER WRONG WITH IT, INCLUDING THEM RECENTLY HAVING TO REPLACE A STARTER, WHICH THEY ORIGINALLY HAD TO REPLACE WHEN I FIRST GOT THE CAR! THEY ALSO HAVE A BAD HABIT OF NOT CALLING A CUSTOMER WHEN THEIR CAR IS COMPLETED ON A SERVICE ISSUE!! MY CAR SAT THERE FOR SEVERAL MONTHS BECAUSE I WAS WAITING FOR THEM TO CALL ME AND TELL ME IT WAS READY...WHICH THEY NEVER DID! (I HAVE PHONE LOGS) I'M TAKING THEM TO COURT!! IF YOU HAVE HAD ANY PROBLEMS WITH CARMAX CARS, PLEASE LET ME KNOW BY EMAIL SO WE CAN PREPARE A CLASS ACTION AGAINST THESE MORONS, BECAUSE THEY'RE HURTING PEOPLE ALL OVER THIS OUNNTRY AND HAVE TO BE STOPPED!!!

It is a FEDERAL offense for anyone to roll back the odometer of a vehicle, call your local Dept. of Motor Vehicles, they handle all complaints with car dealers, or have them refer you to the Dept of Transportation in Wash. DC, they take care of shitty dealereships that roll back odometers. Ask them how you would find out if anyone else has had this problem with this place. They would be able to refer you .

carmax is definitly running a shady buisness
I puchased a one year warranty from them when i bought my vehicle. When the brake master cylinder failed I, of course, brought it to them. Keep in mind here this means complete brake failure. They kept my vehicle for 5 days during which I was unable to go to work. I had to get in touch with them personally, and lo and behold they tell me there is nothing wrong!!!
My vehicle was still under warranty!!
I was treated with much disrespesct by the service center reps as well. If you are organizing some sort of protest please feel free to use my experience as evidence to support your cause. GET THEM!

Carmax is ripping off the warranty company as well as their customers. The claimed a tie rod end and stabilizer bar were bent on a car with only 45,000 miles on it. Highly unlikely barring a past collision which there is no carfax history of. They charged the warranty company for the repair as well as a rental car for 7 days, charged me my deductible. And in addition want to charge me double the going rate for a wheel alignment which they recommend since they took everything apart and did not count the amount of turns on the tie rod in order to put it back the same amount of turns thus eliminating the need for alignment. Of course I have the option of refusing the wheel alignment, however, that would negate my warranty!

I'd love to sue them. They are the sorriest people I've ever dealt with. I purchased a BMW Z3 from them and it's been nothing short of a nightmare.

Get this. My car had a busted speaker, took them four days to fix it, had to threaten to call 911 to get my car from them, got the back and speaker was still busted. Took it back, they had the car for a week, fixed the speaker but broke my electric driver seat somehow, had the dash put back together wrong, broke the cell phone charger. Took it back, they had it for three days, seat was rigged up, not fixed properly, stereo no longer worked when I got it back. Took it back, they had it it eight days, stereo still not fixed, screwed up my air bag, put 73 miles on the car.... and the dash rattles so bad it's unreal. No one replies to the BBB when you file a complaint against them and no one replies to letters written to the CEO or president of the company. This is the first time I've purchased a car from them and the LAST and I'll tell anyone that'll listen to stay clear of CarMax.

I just bought a saturn SL1 from carmax, and as much as i hate to say it everything has been great, it might be that I got lucky, but the company was much better than the other car company wich sold me a jetta that broke down a day later and w/o phone calls from the BBB and a few friends were not even going to help me. One thing is for sure the laws need to be changed for the buyer and not the seller of used cars, these so called lemon laws are never enforced and the fine print somehow always manages to get you....screw used car places

There is a definite problem with Carmax and their service repair reliability (see my post of Jan 5, 20070. I wonder if a class action suit would be warranted? There must be thousands of people who have been inconvenienced or worse by Carmax.. Any Lawyers out there?

Here's one for you...I am astay-at-home mom with a husband that works to jobs and I have been without a car for almost 4 years. My small group from church took up an offering for our car purchase needs. I started looking for a Honda CR-V because another loving church member offered for me to borrow hers while she was on a two month vacation and I fell in love with hers. I found one through CarMax in FL and wanted to have it transferred to GA. The salesman called and informed me that a 2 hour inspection would take place prior to the exchange of money and that he would call me back. He called back and said everything was cool and so I agreed to the transfer. He told me he would call WHEN the car shipped but did not call until it had ARRIVED. He then told me we has 3 days to come in before it would be placed back on the lot (this he did not mention prior to the transfer). Well, this was in the middle of the week and so my husband had to take off work so we could drive about 45 minutes in Atlanta traffic so that we could test drive it. There was a noise and he said that they would get that fixed but the next day (another day taken from work for my husband). We arrive the next day and were told that it was fixed, test drove it and the noise was still there and the salesman tried to blame it on the way I was braking. When he drove it and braked (almost throwing us into the windshield) it did not make the noise. Shame on me for not willing to brake like that everytime almost risking our lives so that I do not experience this noise. Come to find out it had not been fixed yet. We had to come back again. Finally the noise was gone and I was assured that they had repaired it with Honda parts. Went it to buy the car and when I told the salesman that my father (who has been in the car business for many, many years advised me on the particular make and model based on the mileage and year of the car) advised me not to buy the service plan, actually asked me if my father was willing to fix the car should something go wrong!!! I was so appalled that I would have left then if not for the money spent to transfer the car already. So we come home with the car and within the 5 days the noise was back. We went in determined to get our money back, were then handed over to a Assistant Manager who assured us that it could be fixed and that he could find us another car. That he wanted to make things right for us. I told him that it was highly important that this purchased be handled properly since God had convicted our loving church members to reach into there own pockets for us. He said that he certainly understood. We found and bought another car (giving them one more chance), took it to our machanic (our machanic understanding that we would be taking back to the dealership if something needed to be fixed so he would not be getting money to fix it=honest assessment), went back to CarMax to have the transmission fluid flushed, fuel filter changed and the power steering fluid flushed. They would not agree to all these (what did they do during their 125 point inspection???) but did do some of these. After we got it back it did not run right and we had to fight to get them to take the car back in for service. Finally after many days of them having it, they discovered what I was talking about and took it to a transmission specialist for a rebuilt transmission and since we have gotten it back it still runs worse than the older model that I drove from my church friend and hers had more miles on it. During this process I have learned that a friend of mine just going in to look in the lot was followed to the bathroom by a salesman who waited for her to come out, an Assistant Manager did not return my phone calls, I was transferred several times by phone to places I was not inform of before the transfer thus feeling very lost once someone else picked up, waited endlessly in the showroom with a 4-year-old at dinner time with no working vending machines and watched while the business office was unorganized and ignored people at the window. I have emailed them my survey informing them that I will NEVER buy from them again and that if there was real justice in this world I would get my money back (or should I say the money that God provided through our friends)!

May God have mercy!

WE BOUGHT A CAR FROM CARMAX ON SAT ON SUNDAY BOTH BACK TIRES WENT FLAT AT THE SAME TIME ON THE FREEWAY AND WE WERE LUCKY WE WERE NOT KILLED. IT TURNED OUT THAT THEY DID NOT INSTALL THE VALVE STEMS RIGHT ON THE TIRES BECAUSE THE TIRE WERE "OKAY" BUT I DIDN'T WANT THEM AFTER BEING ON THE FREEWAY FLAT AT 65MPH. WE ALMOST LOST CONTROL OF THE CAR. I TOLD CARMAX TO REPLACE THE TIRES AND THEY REFUSED. THEY FINALLY BROKE DOWN AND OFFERED ME SOME EQUALLY CHEAP TIRES. I REFUSED AND RETURNED THE CAR AND REFUSED TO PAY THEM A CENT AND GOT OUR MONEY BACK. THEY ACTED REMORSFUL AND THAT'S ALL IT WAS A BIG ACT! THEY KEPT TELLING ME THEY WOULD SEE WHAT THEY WOULD DO AND CAN DO AND I WENT ANACONDA AND TOLD THEM EITHER DO WHAT I WANT OR THE DEALS OFF! THEY ALSO TOLD ME THEY WERE PUTTING THE TIRES ON BEFORE I OK'D IT.
